Abstract

The SENDAS program focuses on education for the care and support of children and adolescents (NNyA) with type 1 diabetes in the school environment with the aim of providing tools to the entire educational community, creating an inclusive and safe environment.

This structured education program is aimed at primary schools where children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes attend. The program is developed in three educational modules aimed at different recipients: teaching and non-teaching staff at the school, families and classmates.

The educators who provide the program are part of transdisciplinary teams that share a comprehensive approach that includes aspects related to nutritional and physical activity habits, emotions, management of hypo and hyperglycemia at school, as well as diverse social and cultural situations.

Educators are part of health institutions and universities, with local endorsements from municipalities or provincial Health and Education agencies.

The educational material used is based on the IDF Argentine kids school pack supported by SANOFI and ISPAD, which was adapted by members of the SAD Pediatrics Committee.

In Argentina, law number 23753 and amendment 26914 resolution 2820/22 establishes guidelines on the right to education for self-care and support for people with diabetes and their caregivers. The SENDAS educational program has been developed since 2020, reaching more than 128 schools throughout the country and continues to adapt to the needs of the pediatric population in “easy reading” and developing interactive digital educational material.
