Abstract

Asymptomatic bacteriuria (AB) is often discovered incidentally through routine testing. urine. The prevalence is three to four times higher in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). Risk factors are the longer duration of DM, peripheral neuropathy, macroalbuminuria, lower body mass index and a previous urinary tract infection (UTI) event. The diagnosis of BA is the isolation of a specified amount of colonies of a bacteria in urine samples from an individual without signs or symptoms of UTI. Escherichia coli. and gram negative bacteria are the most common. It is suggested not to treat BA in diabetic women with good metabolic control, regardless of the appearance of pyuria. Bacteriuria should not be screened or treated in asymptomatic diabetic patients with good metabolic control.

Screening: in both diabetic and non-diabetic patients, screening and treatment for BA should be performed in: a) pregnant women in the first and second trimester of pregnancy; b) patients who will undergo urological procedures; c) patients receiving a kidney transplant or another solid organ in the first 3 months after transplant.
