Alterations in female sexual function: the forgotten topic?
Keywords:
diabetes, female sexual functionAbstract
Female sexual dysfunction is common in women with diabetes, significantly affecting their quality of life. These dysfunctions can manifest as decreased sexual desire, arousal problems, difficulties achieving orgasm, and pain during sexual intercourse.
Diabetes can affect sexual function through various mechanisms, including vascular damage, neuropathy, hormonal alterations, and psychological factors.Poor glycemic control and prolonged disease duration are associated with a higher risk of sexual dysfunction. Additionally, diabetes complications such as neuropathy and cardiovascular disease can exacerbate these problems. Psychological factors, such as depression and anxiety, which are more prevalent in people with diabetes, also contribute to sexual dysfunction.Diagnosing these disorders requires a comprehensive evaluation including detailed medical history, physical examination, and, in some cases, specific tests. Treatment should be multidisciplinary, addressing both medical and psychological aspects. This may include optimization of glycemic control, management of comorbidities, hormone therapy, psychological interventions, and, in some cases, specific therapies for sexual dysfunction.Early identification and management of sexual dysfunction in women with diabetes is crucial for improving their overall well-being and relationship satisfaction.
