Abstract

Autumn may be a dull season, but it has also brought valuable scientific insight into one of the most serious and costly complications of diabetes mellitus (DM): diabetic foot (DF). This condition not only threatens patients' well-being but also carries high morbidity and mortality. The 5-year mortality rate for people with a DF ulcer is approximately 30%, exceeding 70% for those with a major amputation,1 with depression being a key factor in prognosis.2 In fact, a meta-analysis reports a 47% incidence of depression in patients with DF, with variations by region.3 The study "Association according to the Saint Elian classification in diabetic foot in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus: quality of life and depression" prospectively analyzes the relationship between DF severity (classified using the Saint Elian wound scoring system), depression, and quality of life in patients with DM2.
