Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) and obesity are multifactorial chronic pathologies that affect a significant proportion of the world's population and frequently coexist. Due to the chronic nature of these diseases, their effective management requires a thorough understanding of therapeutic strategies—including nutritional, pharmacological, and surgical—as well as the psychosocial factors that influence their development and response to treatment.

With the aim of updating perspectives on the approach to these pathologies, the Graduate Committee of the Argentine Diabetes Society conducted an exhaustive narrative review of the scientific literature. The final documents were drafted in the context of the 20th Graduate Conference, held in Buenos Aires. The topics addressed in the final documents were selected for their relevance to the proper management of people with DM and obesity. These include:

  • Psychosocial aspects: describing the emotional, social, and behavioral factors that influence both conditions.
  • Nutritional therapy and physical activity: including a review of different nutritional and exercise strategies.
  • Pharmacological and surgical treatment: detailed reviews of the most recent and effective therapeutic options.
