Abstract

Symposium 15: Other conditions and diabetes

Is neuropathy in patients with diabetes always due to diabetes?

There are various forms of diabetic neuropathy and distal polyneuropathy is the most common complication of diabetes mellitus (DM).

10% of patients with DM present neuropathy at the time of diagnosis, while this percentage rises from 40 to 60% depending on whether electrophysiology or only clinical criteria are used.

However, not all patients with neuropathy and DM have a neuropathy caused by their DM, and in one in 10 diabetic patients with neuropathy the cause is not DM. Likewise, 10 to 50% of diabetic patients, according to different studies, have one or more potential causes of neuropathy.
