Abstract

6 voices in 10 minutes: Psychosocial aspects and older adults

Institutionalized older adult patient

The aspects inherent to hospital institutionalization are particularly important in the elderly population. In urban societies, more than half of admissions to intensive care units (ICU) are people over 65 years of age. In this context, the condition of having diabetes increases the risk due to the morbidity generated by the acute and chronic complications of the disease.

ICU hospitalizations in older adults were associated with the development of subsequent cognitive deterioration, which can complicate the approach to depressive symptoms present in many patients with diabetes.
