Abstract

Pars plana vitrectomy in proliferative diabetic retinopathy initially fulfils three central objectives: to clear the media, when there is cataract or haemorrhage in the vitreous cavity;  to apply the retina in case of tractional or combined retinal detachment; stabilise proliferative diabetic retinopathy by performing endopanophotocoagulation.

It may or may not be combined with cataract surgery depending on the clinical case to be treated.
