Abstract

Female sexual dysfunction (FSD) is twice as common in women with diabetes. It is a cause of anguish and has a negative impact on quality of life. Self-administered questionnaires can help professionals and women to identify the problem. The gold standard is called the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI), it determines sexual function according to six domains including: sexual desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction, and dyspareunia (pain). Factors such as medications can influence sexual function, and blood tests can identify underlying hormonal problems.

There are three aspects related to DM that affect functional sexuality in women

1. Physical problems related to sexual intercourse such as lack of vaginal lubrication, pain during sex, and lack of ability to achieve orgasm, resulting from high or low blood glucose values and autonomic neuropathy.
