Abstract

Steatosis (fatty liver) is defined as fatty infiltration of more than 5% of hepatocytes. Its prevalence in the general population is approximately 30%, being higher in special populations such as diabetes and obesity. Also with greater possibility of progressing to more serious forms of the disease.

Type 2 diabetes is one of the strongest clinical predictors of progression from simple steatosis to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and cirrhosis.
