Abstract

Observing obesity epistemologically, it was Hippocrates of Cos (460 BC), with his method on sensible experience, who stated that “sudden death is more frequent in the obese than in the thin” and that “the obese have muscular laxity and red complexion due to humidity.”

Claudius Galen of Pergamon (130-201) made reference to two types of obesity: moderate obesity, considered natural, and immoderate obesity, considered morbid, the product of an inadequate lifestyle, with the individual having a significant degree of blame and responsibility for his illness.

In The Lancet (1849), Hassal presented the theory about some types of obesity dependent on an increase in the number of adipocytes. The behavior of obese individuals regarding the energy expenditure of their muscle mass was discussed.
