Abstract

The coexistence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and diabetes mellitus (DM) acts synergistically, aggravating kidney and CV consequences. Early evaluation of the lipid profile will allow establishing treatment strategies to reduce morbidity and mortality due to atherosclerotic CV causes. The characteristic lipid pattern of CKD associated with DM consists mainly of hypertriglyceridemia and decreased HDL-cholesterol (HDL-c) values. The increase in triglyceride levels is the result of pathophysiological mechanisms that occur in both pathologies: hepatic overproduction of VLDL, a consequence of insulin resistance, and reduction in triglyceride lipolysis due to a decrease in the activity of the enzyme lipoprotein lipase. The accumulation of lipoprotein remnants constitutes a significant predictor of CV events.
