Abstract

Symposium 8: Nutritional treatment of diabetes: new horizons

Nutrition in type 2 diabetes mellitus

ADA’s nutrition recommendations

Year 2019 Position Statement:

  1. There has been greater evidence that the reduction of the total intake of carbohydrates is connected to the reduction of glycemic levels.
  2. People with T2D or in risk should replace drinks rich in sugar, including natural fruit juice, by drinks with sweeteners for some time, trying to drink water as much as possible in order to control glycemia and weight and reduce cardiovascular diseases and fatty liver disease.
  3. A high intake of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fat (Mediterranean pattern) improves carbohydrate metabolism and decreases cardiovascular risk in people with T2D.
  4. The intake of nuts, seeds and fatty fish decreases cardiovascular risk.
  5. Small studies have shown that patients with T2D and obesity with extreme energy restriction were with VLCDs able to reduce HbA1c < 6.5% and fasting glycemia < 126 mg/dL in the absence of pharmacologic therapy.
