Abstract

Introduction: The rapid increase in the incidence of people with type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, as well as the increase in risk factors that precede the diagnosis, led us to wonder if health care workers are aware of their magnitude and have healthy lifestyle habits.

Objectives: The aims of the study is to determine the risk of suffering type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in the next 10 years in Health care workers in the public sector of the Metropolitan Region of the province of Mendoza, between the months of August and October of 2019. To analyze and establish the percentage of distribution, according to the risk level. High, moderate and low.

Material and methods: Observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study. Health care workers from the Metropolitan Region of Mendoza province were analyzed. The measuring instruments were: Findrisk questionnaires, electronic weight scale, wall height rod, inextensible measuring tape. The measurement techniques used were those specified in the recommended protocols, Weight, Height and waist circumference. The data was tabulated and the sum of the points resulting from each variable was made. The questionnaire classifies risk levels in a range from 0 to 26 points, defining the following risk categories: Low ≤ 6 points / Moderate: from 7 to 14 points / High> 15 points.

Results: The percentage of women was 72.2%, while the percentage of men was 27.8%. 57.9% of those evaluated were under 45 years old (25.6% were between 45 and 54 years old). 68.2% were overweight (BMI ≥30, 20.8% vs BMI 25-30, 37.5%). Presence of abdominal obesity 35.6% of men vs 23.4% of women. Physical inactivity was observed in 51.2%. 25.5% said they did not consume vegetables / fruits on daily basics. Hypertension was found in 14.4 and 5.6% had a personal history
of high blood glucose, meanwhile 54.9% recognized at least one family member with Diabetes (24.9% direct relatives). Regarding the risk of suffering from DM2, 57% had a score higher than 7 in the survey. The smoking habit was also added to the questionnaire, which showed that 16.7% of the health care workers smoke.

Conclusions: The study of the subjects show a frequency higher than 50% of developing T2DM in the following ten years. The identification of modifiable risk factors will allow the implementation of actions to reduce this risk.
