Selection and results of pancreas-kidney transplant and pancreas transplant alone in diabetes mellitus
In Argentina, the first pancreas-kidney transplant took place in Buenos Aires in august 1968. Today, there are different transplant centers all over the country.
Over the years, the donor and receptor selection has improved greatly, as have the maintenance of the organs to transplant, the surgical technique and the immunosuppressive treatment. That is why current results are similar to any other solid organ.
The objectives of this transplant are to restore normoglycemia, try to stabilize chronic complications associated to diabetes, and improve quality of life and survival of the patients.
