Symposium 8: Nutritional treatment of diabetes: new horizons

Nutrition in diabetes and celiac disease

The existing genetic association between type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1D) and Celiac Disease (CD) has led to hypothesize about a possible common autoimmune tissue damage mechanism, and, even a possible intolerance to the antigens present in the diet, as etiological mechanism for both diseases. In the last years, an increase in the incidence of both T1D and CD has been observed.

More than a 90% of the people with CD and a 60%-70% of the people who have T1D express the same antigen HLA-DQA1*0501 and DQB1*0201. Celiac Disease can be found in a silent or subclinical stage in patients with T1D, in proportions that vary from 1% to 16%.

Prevalence of CD in patients with T1D oscillates between 1% and 8%.
