Abstract

The prevalence of hypertension in adults with diabetes is approximately 80%, and it is at least twice as frequent in people with type 2 diabetes (DM2), compared to people of the same age without DM2. The coexistence of hypertension and diabetes notably increases the risk of developing coronary heart disease, heart failure, stroke and mortality from atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Additionally, it can increase the risk of microvascular disease, such as nephropathy or retinopathy.

A goal of systolic BP <130 mmHg would be recommended if it can be achieved with CV safety, in people with DM and high cardiovascular risk defined as:

•  established atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (acute coronary syndrome (ACS), cerebrovascular accident (CVA), transient ischemic attack (TIA), peripheral vascular disease (PVD).
