Abstract

Juana's young granddaughter (21 years old) is a carrier of type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM1), obesity and celiac disease (CD). CD originates from T-cell mediated immune reaction to dietary gluten and is characterized by small, atrous to hairy bowel inflammation, crypt hyperplasia, and malabsorption. The prevalence of this association is 1% worldwide, highly variable in different countries and rises from 4 to 10% if it is associated with DM1.
