Depression in diabetes mellitus

Diabetes mellitus (DM) and depression are considered a Public Health problem. DM2 is a disease that affects one in five adults over 65 years of age. DM increases the risk of depression by 1.5 to 2 times.

Depression is the most common affective disorder in older adults; It is underdiagnosed and treated. The prevalence of depression in people with DM is 15 to 40%. The DECOYDI study, carried out by the SAD Hypertension Committee, included 427 patients with DM2 and 315 controls ≥65 years old, HbA1c 7.15±3%, duration of DM2 11.78±9.17 years, there the frequency of depression was 18.2 vs 12.4% (p<0.03) respectively. 11% of patients with DM2 had a previous diagnosis of depression and 89% were diagnosed using the Yesavage Geriatric Depression Scale. The risk factors for depression were DM2 (2.05 times), female sex, family history of depression and age >75, and physical activity was protective.
