Abstract

Data from the 4th National Survey of Risk Factors1 shows that in Argentina, 12.7% of the adult population has self-reported diabetes or elevated blood glucose, and only 3 out of 10 has had a foot examination in the last year.

Complications around the foot are among the most serious in diabetes mellitus (DM). It is estimated that 25% of people with DM will develop a diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) during their lifetime, and 30 to 40% of those whose DFUs are successfully treated will suffer the condition again within the first year. Its most unfortunate consequence, amputation, is about 20 times more frequent in people with DM than the general population, and around 85% of amputations are preceded by a DFU2,3. This situation can change by implementing strategies that include prevention, education of both patients and the health team, together with close monitoring of people with DM; amputation rates can be reduced by up to 85%.
