Pre-surgical preparation of the patient with obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus
In 1991, NIH, in a consensus meeting, recommended that “gastrointestinal surgery for severe obesity should be carried out in a framework of attention of a multidisciplinary team of physician, surgeons, psychologist and nutrition experts”.
Pre-surgery preparation allows patients to reach a better medical condition to avoid adverse outcomes. In this context, medical, nutritional and psychological detailed and individualized evaluation that considers the comorbidities and the expectations the person might have are key to improve the after surgery results.
