Abstract

Symposium 10:  Insulin resistance: from pathophysiology to treatment

Liver

The liver plays a key role on the adjustment of glucose and lipids' metabolism. Excess of nutrients on diets and obesity produce insulin resistance, a state on which insulin fails to appropriately regulate hepatic metabolism, which may cause a glucose production excess.

There is evidence of an increase on glucose production and de novo lipogenesis in insulin-resistent individuals. The combination of glucotoxicity and lipotoxicity produce an inflammatory state that increases even more IR.
